Paper-cut of a rocking chair mounted on paper and placed in a shadow box frame. 20” x 24
When thinking about using the imagery of an empty chair to depict absence, I thought that the medium of cut paper would be interesting to work with, since it plays with cutting away the material in order to produce the image. Thus, this is the absence of a chair. White paper over white paper, means that the image is largely created by shadows. The rocking chair holds some familiarity and nostalgia for many people, and it can produce a feeling of comfort and sadness at the same time.
