Journaling and Art Supplies Packing

I went on a trip with my little family last week, and even though I was traveling with two little kids (and my husband) and there was almost no possibility of having time to do either journaling or art, I insist on bringing all the things. I will never learn.

I am getting better at packing these things though, and I felt like my system was pretty good and I didn't go TOO overboard. Here's what I packed:

A stack of lovely journals and planners, including Traveler's Notebooks, a handmade leather book, a hobonichi weeks, and a small paperback sketchbook.

I chose to take all of these books. Spoiler alert: it was too many. I didn’t need my reading journal at all and I took it only because it’s so cute I just couldn’t be separated from it for that long. I didn’t use the sketchbook at all, but I might have, given more time. I did at least *touch* the others at some point during the trip. My “observation journal” is for quick sketches and writing. I don’t do any decorating in it—only pen and occasional watercolor, and it has a lot to do with my art practice and things that I’m finding interesting, so I try to have it on me all the time. I keep it in my bag when I’m out of the house. I did the slightest bit of travel journaling at the hotel in Birmingham, so I was glad to have my Traveler’s Company notebook with me, but at the very least I had a great spot to stash all the things I would journal with later.

I can keep everything I need for a quick journaling session in this Peg & Awl Maker’s Pouch. As you can see, it holds a standard size Traveler’s Notebook with room to spare.

This is a Hobonichi Small Drawer Pouch, and it is exactly the right size for everything I need to carry. The only thing that I took outside of this was a small tin for colored pencils. As you can see, it holds a lot!

In all honesty, I put very little of this to use, but I did feel prepared. I got to utilize the scissors when my kids insisted I cut the tags off of their new stuffed animals, so there’s that. It’s good to be ready for everything! And, even though this was a lot, I didn’t feel overwhelmed by it and I knew where everything was. It all fit easily in my backpack along with a book, my iPad, and all those pesky cords you have to take everywhere.
